 Rafik Hegab is the Founder, Artistic Director, and Resident Choreographer of Virginia National Ballet, which he has led since its founding in 2013. Recognized as the only Egyptian to found and direct a professional ballet company internationally, Mr. Hegab has established Virginia National Ballet as one of the region’s leading professional ballet companies, known for its original productions, international collaborations, and diverse repertoire spanning classical, neoclassical, and contemporary ballet.

Under Mr. Hegab’s artistic leadership, Virginia National Ballet has grown into a respected professional ballet company presenting a full annual season at premier venues including the Hylton Performing Arts Center, Capital One Hall, Chrysler Hall, and the Ailey Citigroup Theater in New York City. The company was also invited by the Danville Concert Association to serve as the featured guest company reopening the performing arts in the city of Danville and its surrounding region following a long hiatus. Virginia National Ballet also performed at the Franklin Park Arts Center with the Loudoun Symphony Orchestra, and has collaborated with the Old Bridge Chamber Orchestra.  VNB was selected for the Virginia Commission for the Arts Touring Roster from 2017–2023 and continues to expand its touring presence throughout the United States and internationally.

Virginia National Ballet has earned recognition for bringing internationally acclaimed ballet stars to perform alongside the company, including renowned artists from American Ballet Theatre and New York City Ballet such as Daniil Simkin, James Whiteside, Ashley Bouder, Isabella Boylston, Teresa Reichlen, Ask la Cour, and Aaron Smyth. The company has also built a reputation for innovative theatrical productions that blend ballet with cinematic storytelling, dramatic design, and contemporary musical influences.

A prolific choreographer, Mr. Hegab creates one to two original world premieres each season. His choreographic works for Virginia National Ballet include Aida, Aladdin, Ballet Evolution, Bohemian Rhapsody, Bolero, Carmen, Carmina Burana, Cinderella, Collection, For Those We Lost, La Bohème, Led Zeppelin, Life in the Fast Lane, Moonlight, Pictures at an Exhibition, Snow White, Tango Nights, The Beatles, The Four Seasons, Swan Lake, and The Nutcracker. His productions are recognized for their theatrical atmosphere, cinematic visual concepts, musical interpretation, and emotionally driven storytelling. All of these productions were world premieres created specifically for Virginia National Ballet.

Broadwayworld.com, DCMetroTheaterArts.com  Inside NOVA, Bull Run Observer, and more. The company has also received numerous awards and honors, including Best of Prince William multiple consecutive years, Northern Virginia Magazine recognition, and Washington Parent Picks awards. 

In addition to its professional company, Virginia National Ballet operates a highly regarded ballet school that trains the next generation of dancers. Students from the school have placed among the Top 24 at Youth America Grand Prix, received scholarships to prestigious summer intensives and universities, and earned professional contracts with ballet companies in the United States and abroad. 

In 2020, Mr. Hegab founded Music International Grand Prix, an international competition dedicated to discovering and supporting exceptional musicians from around the world. The competition welcomed artists across multiple disciplines, including piano, strings, voice, winds, composition, ensembles, and world music. The competition attracted participants from numerous countries and was recognized for providing artists with valuable performance opportunities, scholarships, professional exposure, and live finals in New York City, including performances at Merkin Hall.

Mr. Hegab is also the Founder of Arts Of America, an organization dedicated to supporting artists in dance, music, theater, and the performing arts worldwide. Through mentorship, collaborations, educational initiatives, and professional opportunities, the organization strives to help emerging and established artists gain recognition and advance their careers internationally.

Mr. Hegab was selected as a Guest Choreographer for the Regional Emmy Award-winning production The Circle of Life: The Music of Tim Rice by Young Artists of America at the Music Center at Strathmore, which was televised on PBS. His choreography has also been presented internationally, including performances at the International Ballet Festival in Nicaragua, and he remains in demand as a choreographer and coach for dancers competing in prestigious competitions such as YAGP.

As a teacher and mentor, Mr. Hegab has trained numerous award-winning dancers, with former students going on to dance professionally with companies including Milwaukee Ballet, San Antonio Ballet, Gelsey Kirkland Ballet, and Stara Zagora State Opera Ballet in Bulgaria. He has also coached dancers who won first place in the Egyptian National Ballet Competition.

In recognition of his artistic achievements and contributions to the arts community, Mr. Hegab received the 2019 Seefeldt Award for Outstanding Individual Artist.  He also won Inside NOVA's Best Choreographer and Teacher Award in 2022.

Originally from Egypt, Mr. Hegab received his diploma from the Higher Institute of Ballet in Cairo in 2000 and later earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Dance Pedagogy (Vaganova Methodology) and Choreography from the Academy of Arts in Cairo in 2009. He joined the Cairo Opera Ballet Company in 1999, won First Place in the Egyptian National Ballet Competition in 2000, was promoted to Soloist in 2002, and became a Principal Dancer in 2003.

During his career as a principal dancer, Mr. Hegab toured internationally with the Cairo Opera Ballet Company throughout China, Lebanon, the Czech Republic, Jordan, Turkey, Germany, Italy, Austria, Spain, Mexico, India, Greece, and Russia. His principal roles included the Matador in Don Quixote alongside Julio Bocca, John in Zorba the Greek, Ali in Le Corsaire, Siegfried in Swan Lake, the principal role in Carmina Burana, the Cavalier in The Nutcracker, and many others.
Fluent in Arabic, Russian, and English, Mr. Hegab continues to expand the artistic reach of Virginia National Ballet through original productions, international collaborations, artistic leadership, and a commitment to making ballet and the performing arts accessible to diverse audiences across the United States and internationally.
